colour UDL short-listed for international design competition in Pennine Lancashire

colour UDL with Civic Architects have passed the first stage in an international design competition to create world-class public space in Burnley, Lancashire.

Sandygate Square, lies within the core section of the industrial canal in Burnley where an impressive sequence of mills, weaving sheds and canal-related features enclose the canal corridor. The area, known as the Weavers’ Triangle, is widely recognised as being one of the most important surviving examples of the growth and dynamism of the Lancashire cotton industry.

Naturally, our design principle is driven by “people, place and context” – a site specific approach to testing the design possibilities, and above all a strong emphasis on participation between lay people and professional stakeholders with design ambition.

The Pennine Lancashire Squared competition invited practices to submit Expressions of Interest to create outstanding public spaces across six Pennine towns. Stephen Hodder MBE, Chair of the judging panel, said “The 78 pre-qualification submissions were of a consistently high standard and comprised a number of inventive and memorable approaches to the design of the public realm in Pennine Lancashire…”

Our concept designs will be developed following an on-site briefing day later in the year which will provide a valuable opportunity to meet key stakeholders and participate in a creative programme of community engagement.
