Community Workshops to Develop Design Guide for Walker

As part of Colour-UDL's collaborative and research-led approach, members of Colour-UDL have recently been working in conjunction with Northern Architecture to run a series of workshops with young people developing a design guide for public realm regeneration in Walker. The sessions, for young residents from Walker aged 12-14, have been organised with Walker regeneration team and the Walker Places for People team. Activities have included a mixture of workshops and a field trip to explore spaces around the city. The aim was for the young people to map existing spaces in Walker that are familiar to them, and then imagine new spaces and discuss how these might look and feel. Various aspects of public space were explored, including activities, people, shapes, forms, colours, textures, and light. The young people were encouraged to use a range of techniques to explore this including 'mind maps', photography and sketching.

  • Colour-UDL have then collated the work from all the sessions into a design guide booklet which the young residents will present to show their ideas. Further details of this project will shortly feature in the design attitudes and research section of this website.
